Blak Futures Month is a global digital vision board where Black people around the world are invited to imagine and co-create the future.

MY TRIBE MONTHS

We’re launching a series of months designed to connect, elevate and celebrate the global Black community.

We believe in pleasure activism, the motto behind our festivals and events is joy is an act of resistance and in line with our ethos of centering not censoring Black voices all events are Black owned and led – done by us not for us.

Back to Blak

We’re decolonising the word Black when speaking about Black people, by removing the ‘c’ for coloniser in our event titles. No traditional African language has the Latin letter ‘c’ and its accompanying sound. It was introduced with colonisation and was substituted by colonisers whenever they saw or heard the ‘k’ sound. As such ‘c’ will usually translate as another sound in traditional African languages. By removing the ‘c’ people can easily identify authentically independent Blak-owned work from that produced/owned by others – Institutional and structural anti-Black racism has seen many events and existing months such as Black History Month colonised with many non-Black organisations and institutions and individuals making huge profits, occupying and taking up space and gaining control of the narrative that does not belong to them. This has heightened since 2020. By using this spelling it indicates to all that this independently Blak-owned and controlled work and/or event and as such this is where any profits and production costs go.

BUILDING ROOTED

BLACK-OWNED INSTITUTIONS

We recognise that the best way to dismantle institutional/structural racism is to build rooted Black and Indigenous owned institutions, so we’re focussed on creating and investing in projects and organisations that help us to do just that. Turning grassroots organisations into national and international institutions and Black-owned businesses into multinational corporations.

Rooted means the individuals and organisations we support have a clear understanding of the complexities of anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism, have a proven track record of being rooted in resistance and are not afraid to speak out or act truthfully and authentically.

Reimagining the future – our current world was built on enslavement & colonisation, the legacy of which is institutional anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and centuries of trauma. We’re building a new future rooted in healing and equity for all. We understand that no such future can be built whilst anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism exist. We also understand that those with the lived experience are always the ones best placed to come up with the most effective and lasting solutions. As Black and Indigenous people are at the bottom of every oppressed group (race, class, ability, sex, sexuality etc), they are the ones best placed to come up with the lasting solutions, therefore, should be the voices leading the conversation and designing the solutions for change. But not just any Black/Indigenous voices, those voices with the relevant range and depth of knowledge required for such a complex and multifaceted issues. Each meeting will explore a different issue, looking at actionable outcomes we can all participate in to bring forward the change we all want to see. Join our best dreamers and creators, movers and shakers as they push us all to ask ourselves the difficult questions that will help us to reimagine and build a better future.
